Itinerary
8.30am: Take the opportunity to discover one of Bagan’s famous legends as you pass the tracks of King Anawrahta and his precious white elephant. The tale has it that the King was given a replica of Lord Buddha’s tooth, which he placed on the back of a sacred elephant before he set him free. This elephant stopped at four places around Bagan on which later the King had stupas built. Therefore, it is believed by the local Burmese that visiting all four of these places in one day makes your wish come true.
Your excursion starts in the morning at your hotel when you are picked up. Then will your first stop be the Nyaung U market, a colorful local market with a wide range of products. Then visit Shwezigon Pagoda, one of Bagan’s most famous sites with a legend behind its creation that only very few people know. The centre of Shwezigon is a large golden bell-shaped pagoda located upon three terraces. The lowest terrace once possessed wood carvings of the nat spirits but now are they housed in a small hall within the temple grounds.
Then you visit Tu Yin Taung, a hilltop stupa situated in the eastern part of the main Archaeological Park. By the time you enter the temple, you will be greeted by 500 monk statues lined in rows. The stupa’s elevated location brings to you fabulous views and a unique perspective of Bagan as well as its surroundings.
Your next stop is Lawka Nandar, located in New Bagan, right close to Irrawaddy River. It is a bulbous stupa with a cylindrical bell with three octagonal terraces as base. The temple is still place of everyday worship as it preserves a Buddha relic. Before continuing on your tour you will take lunch at the Nanduwan Restaurant.
In the afternoon you embark a private boat to transfer across the river to Tant Kyi Taung, the last temple on your itinerary. On your boat, as you drive along the Irrawaddy, you will see many beautiful sights of temples from the distance. We travel by jeep (approximately 15 minutes) through the countryside to Tant Kyi Taung. This is a unique temple in Bagan as it is believed that many centuries ago, Buddha stopped at this hill, where the temple is now built up. On your way back to the jetty, you have the option to stop in Tant Kyi village for a short walk around.
Transfer back to Bagan by boat over the river and then by car to your hotel.
