Itinerary
Considered as one of the most beautiful places of Shan State, Sagar is located in the far southern region of Inle Lake having stunning landscape and authentic local culture. The area has recently opened the door for tourism, thus, not many travellers know about the day trip to this beautiful region.
8.30AM: In the morning, your 1 day Sagar exploring tour starts with a boat ride. It will take about 2.5 - 3 hours to get to Sagar but the journey is filled with fabulous views and unique species of birds, both indigenous and migratory. Just relax and enjoy the ride!
En route to Sagar area, you will take several stops (the order depends on the time, tourist boat and activities in the villages).
The prime highlight of this area are the 'sunken' stupas of Sagar - 108 stupas from the 16 or 17th centuries, which are underwater for a few months in a year (from July to October). You also have the option to visit the local monastery or the village. Continue to the Thaya Gone village, home of the Pa-Oh, Shan and Inthar people, which is famous for its production of local rice alcohol. Observe the local process of distillation and feel free to try some of its brew. Here in Thaya Gone you can also take the chance to conquer the top of a small hill, from where you have great views to the lake and surrounding villages. Another destination is Sae Khaung Pottery Village where to contemplate the crafting of oil, water pots and the natural, underground kilns used by the villagers.
Tar Kaung, a 200 stupa complex would make a perfect photo stop lying on the western shores of the Sagar area. At around 14.30 PM, the boat will turn back to the main part of Inle Lake. On your way back in the afternoon, the light has faded and everything appears so much different on the return, even the activities on the water and in the village have changed: Rice noodles had been dried in the sun, spun cotton are hung out for drying and kids return from school. You arrive at your hotel in the early evening to freshen up and contemplate the sunset.
TRIP NOTES:
- Duration: 7 to 8 hours
- Best time to travel: Sagar has a distinctive dry and rain season which may cause significant influence to the suggested itinerary. In the period of June to September, the rain can be heavy, which the reason is why pottery workshops are closed. Moreover, during this season thick vegetation on the water may create obstructions on narrow paths to the village, preventing boats on their way. While if the water level drops, some places may be inaccessible. Should any of these occur, visits to alternate villages in this area will be organized.
- Pick-up & Drop-off point: At client's hotel
- Dress standard: Dress code in Myanmar is pretty strict owing to its Buddhist culture. Therefore, you should bring lightweight and long - sleeved clothes. When entering religious sites, your shoulders and knees should be covered. Furthermore, comfortable footwear, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a rain coat are also necessary things to pack. And always remember to check the weather before you go.
- Group Size: Your tour will be in a small group of a maximum of 10 people.
- Child Policy: Children from 6 year olds are permitted on this tour and pay as an adult. Please inform us when booking. Children below the age of 6 are not permitted on this tour.
